The San Juan River winds through the heart of southeastern Utah’s canyon country, carving graceful bends through towering sandstone walls and ancient desert landscapes. Flowing past hundreds of Ancestral Puebloan archaeological sites, the San Juan offers one of the most scenic and culturally rich rafting trips in the Southwest.

River Class / Skill Level

• Class: II–III whitewater with small wave trains and mellow rapids.

• Skill Level: Suitable for beginner and intermediate boaters and family rafting trips.

Season / Permits / Weather

• Boating Season: March through October depending on flows.

• Permit Required: Yes — permits issued by the Bureau of Land Management.

• Best Time to Run: April through June and again in early fall.

• Weather: Warm desert days and cool evenings with occasional summer storms.

Water Levels / River Character

• Typical Flow Range: ~500–5,000 cfs depending on snowmelt and rainfall.

• Low Water: Slower current with shallow riffles and exposed rocks.

• Optimal Flows: 1,000–3,000 cfs provides smooth current and enjoyable wave trains.

• High Water: Faster current and larger waves during spring runoff.

• Special Considerations: Numerous archaeological sites require respectful visitation and adherence to permit rules.

• Standard Put-In: Sand Island Boat Ramp near Bluff.

• Standard Take-Out: Mexican Hat Boat Ramp.

• Trip Length: Approximately 27 miles, typically run in 2–3 days.
