The Arkansas River in Colorado is one of the most popular whitewater rafting destinations in the United States. Much of the river flows through the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area, where commercial outfitters launch daily trips along several famous sections.
Difficulty
The Arkansas offers a wide range of whitewater. Pine Creek and the Numbers near Buena Vista deliver steep, technical Class V and Class IV rapids that challenge experienced paddlers. Downstream, Browns Canyon provides a scenic and more moderate stretch with fun Class III rapids surrounded by granite cliffs and wildlife. The Royal Gorge section of the Arkansas River is a steep, narrow canyon run featuring continuous Class III–IV rapids, powerful hydraulics, and dramatic 1,000-foot granite walls beneath the iconic Royal Gorge Bridge.
